Scorpions

Scorpions are ancient, nocturnal arachnids (class Arachnida, order Scorpiones) with eight legs, prominent pincers (pedipalps), and a segmented, in most cases venomous, curling tail, existing for over 430 million years. They are predators that primarily eat insects, using their venom for hunting and defense. Found worldwide (except Antarctica), they are highly adaptable to deserts, forests, and grasslands.

Southeast Asia (Laos)

Asian Forest Scorpion

A large, glossy black scorpion that relies more on pincers than venom.

South-western United States (Arizona, California, Nevada) and northern Mexico

Arizona Desert Hairy Scorpion

This scorpion gets its name from the fine hairs covering its body, which help it detect vibrations from prey moving across the desert sand.

Tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Tailless Whip Scorpion

The long “whips” are not used for walking — they act like antennae, allowing the animal to explore and navigate in total darkness.
